Mr Abbott would you sell our teaching hospitals to pay for your budget cuts?

“Despite promising before the election not to cut money for health, the Coalition will dramatically shrink the Commonwealth’s share of hospital funding, cutting its annual contribution by $15billion by 2024, with the deepest cuts beginning in 2017.”

There is currently a proposal to sell the best real estate on the RNS Hospital campus #helpsaveRNSH to provide the capital to fund its redevelopment. A short term plan with complete disregard for the long term health care needs of the community, both within Mr Abbots electorate and throughout the state. The Greiner government sold a similar parcel of land in the 1990’s when Peter Collins was the Health Minister.  The sale generated funds that would have run the hospital for only a few months. It would have been the perfect site for the current hospital redevelopment — immediately adjacent to St Leonards station. The current generation of politicians will have incrementally sold off a major teaching hospital campus, to pay the bills. The campus is the result of over 100 years of community effort to create and institution that would provide for our health in the future (2), these efforts have been completely disregarded.

The State government blames the federal governments budgetary cuts, the federal government maintains it is a state responsibility. We have a political system that has failed to serve its community …

Mr Abbot, are you listening to your local community?

Or is this all just “electronic graffiti” ?

We’ve never been a country that’s ripped off generations to pay for today …

“We’ve never been a country that’s ripped off generations to pay for today. And under my government, we never will.” — If this is the case, why in the Prime Ministers own electorate, is the campus of his communities Teaching/Referral hospital being sold to pay for the hospital redevelopment. The money generated would pay for the operating costs of a major hospital for only a few months.  The proposal would sell land that is within 50 m of St Leonards’s railway station.  It is one of our community’s most valuable health assets and should not be sold.  Its proximity to public transport ensures that the health care services provided by the campus are available to members of the community throughout the state. Once this land is sold it is lost forever.

Stephen Hawking: NHS Is Britain’s Finest Public Service and Must Be Preserved from Commercial Interests.

Australian politicians are just as bad. The Prime Minister (Tony Abbot), Treasurer (Joe Hocking), NSW Premier (Mike Baird), NSW Health Minister (Jillian Skinner), are allowing their communities major referral hospitals campus to be sold to commercial interests (http://save.rnsh.org). A short term financial gain, that would pay for the  operating costs of a major teaching hospital for only a few months.  The hospital campus will need to provide for the health care of our community for centuries to come.  What if our parents had sold all the community’s assets to look after themselves?  It’s time to speak to your local politician and get them to understand that either they act in the best interest of the community or they step aside in favour of someone who will.  Mr Abbott needs to understand that the strongly held views of the community and are not just “electronic graffiti”GregPurcellEmail
